Allied Bakeries
T2130 Dot Matrix Printers
Allied Bakeries has purchased a total of 580 Tally dot matrix printers for use in its mobile sales operation. As part of Allied Bakeries’ commitment to delivery, it has replaced Star printers with Tally T2130s within vans to print delivery notes at the point of despatch.
Delivering to around 12,000 sites each day across mainland Britain and Northern Ireland, Allied Bakeries needed printing technology that could withstand long hours on the road and print at substantial volume including multi-part stationery printing.
Allied Bakeries Head of Information Systems, Rob Jones explains, “The major requirement was robustness. It is essential that printers can endure harsh environments and vibration from the movement of the van. Having looked at other brands, Tally printers fulfilled our requirements for easy paper feeding, compatibility with application protocols, and proved the perfect fit for our vans.”
In order to ensure the security of the printers and suppress shock during transit, rubber feet have been customised to the case of each printer, which is secured within a metal cabinet in each van. The printers also had to be refitted with 24-volt power supplies to enable them to run off the van’s battery. As Allied Bakeries provides its field sales staff with handheld units to collect orders and maximise sales during travel, each cabinet has been fitted with an electrical connector that cradles the handheld and enables the transmission of information to the printer.
During the evaluation and implementation of the project, Tally worked in partnership with Alpha Business Computers to meet the specification set. Tally supported Alpha by carrying out all the modifications to the firmware by its own engineers in Basingstoke. Alpha is also providing post-implementation support and is in the process of monitoring customer satisfaction levels.
Tally Managing Director, Robin Edwardes says, “Alpha completely understood the customer requirement, and together, we have made transportable printing very much a reality. This implementation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to dot matrix technology, and highlights the importance of application-dependent printing.”
About Allied Bakeries
Allied Bakeries was founded by Willard Garfield Weston in 1935 and consisted of only seven bakeries. Since then, Allied Bakeries has kept pace with and led many industry changes and at the start of the 21st century, emerged as the leading bakery Company within the United Kingdom. The Company has a one-third share of the bread market and provides a wide range of bread, rolls, and bakery snacks, as well as part-baked lines for bake-off in retailers' stores, and specialist bread used by sandwich-makers. The Company delivers to tens of thousands of shops daily or twice-daily, and has both a thriving own-label business and a strong portfolio of brands including the leading Kingsmill range, complemented by others such as Allinson, Burgen, and Sunblest.
